About Us
History
The reality on the ground in most African Jewish communities is far from where they desire to be in the Future
Indigenous Jewish descendants have a rich history in Africa, with communities that have existed for thousands of years. Unfortunately, over the centuries, various factors such as isolation and forced conversion to the imperialists’ religion have led to a weakening of African black Jewry. However, today, many individuals and communities have since traced their way back to their Jewish roots through rabbinical Judaism, but they continue to exist in separate worlds, distant from one another.
Despite our geographical and cultural differences, we realized that we share the same goals, objectives, and needs- and this gave birth to the formation of an alliance. Through this association, common challenges can be identified and analyzed, with the best solution recommend through series of coordinated actions to solve these problems and drawbacks. This is the primary motivation behind the creation of SAJA, the Sub-Saharan African Jewish Alliance.
At SAJA, we are united by a common purpose: to restore and nurture the diverse Jewish communities of Sub-Saharan Africa. Through our alliance, we aim to overcome the challenges of isolation, promote unity, and build a brighter future for African Jews. We invite you to join us on this meaningful journey as we work towards rebuilding, establishing, developing, and expanding our Jewish world. Together, let us celebrate our shared heritage, empower our communities, and ensure a thriving and vibrant Jewish future in Sub-Saharan Africa.
